Hey Oppo, long time no chat! I’ll eventually get around to writing a post explaining my long ass absence, but more importantly —
I’ve searched around and can’t find much discussion on this (apologies if it’s already been brought up on Oppo). During the reveal of the Model 3, they did a bit of a build-up video, literally showing the components coming together from the ground, up.
Has literally NOBODY noticed that it’ll be AWD? When it starts off showing the platform, there’s clearly front and rear motors with driveshafts to each.

that seems to be the norm for Tesla these days honestly. I’ll wait till we get a Model S D

The base model is RWD, AWD is optional.

I think in Collins’ video of the test drive the driver mentions it’s the Dual-Motor model when he accelerates. And I think he said the “normal” one is 2WD only.

Well, there was some speculation after Elon’s tweet that the front motor in the P85D points towards the powerplant in the 3... some people speculated it would be FWD and literally just use the same front setup as the P85D (which would honestly be a pretty smart idea, from an R&D / production cost standpoint), and others thought it would be the same motor, just thrown in the rear (because handling).
I was pretty surprised to see two motors — I mean, it makes sense to get them the range they’re after (two motors are actually more efficient, because more re-gen captured), but it’s surprising they were able to offer it while maintaining their pricepoint.
Definitely not complaining, just an observation.

There will be an AWD variant - obviously a higher spec. The base will be a single motor - presumably RWD like the S.
If you watch the Jalopnik ride-along video from last night the guy specifically mentions how the car they’re riding in is a dual motor, but even the base single motor is very capable blah blah.
You’re right that there hasn’t been much mention of the AWD aspect - presumably because it has always been a given, that the base will be a single motor but dual motor AWD will also be an option in the higher specs like with the S.

Ah, I hadn’t seen that anywhere.

So, RWD or optional AWD from day 1? That’d be cool. Wonder what the jump in price would be. I’m seriously considering buying one once they’re released.

Wonder what the price difference will be. Elon himself said that the base is still pretty optioned out for the money. I’m considering getting one. The RWD S holds its own fairly well in snowy weather, assuming the 3 would be the same in RWD form. AWD in the S gives you better range, though, so if the price jump isn’t too extreme (maybe $2500-5000?) it might be worth it to go dual motor.

That’s what it sounded like he was saying in the video. They do look pretty good, but with so little infrastructure for EVs in Canada (Ontario, at least) it still doesn’t make much sense to me.

I’m in Arizona. So much EV infrastructure in the Southwest. It’s pretty much perfect for me. I could go from my house to my friend’s place in San Diego with one stop for lunch and charge.
Running the numbers, I would actually spend less monthly than what I’m spending on my FR-S for payments, my insurance would be cheaper, and then (of course) fuel and maintenance would be way cheaper...
As much of a “save-the-manuals” enthusiast as I am, I can’t convince myself otherwise. I’ll most likely have one of these shortly after they’re released. (I might hold out for an AWD crossover variant, though).

Yeah no clue. Agreed that it does sound like a good bargain for $35k if you’re in the market for something at that price point. Now that this is out I’m curious to see what the other automakers are going to do to compete between now and the 3 getting delivered within the next 2 years or so. $10k price cut on BMW 3 series?!

I honestly think that since this is a relatively early ‘production ready’ prototype, (they say late 2017, meaning 2 years from now) Tesla is doing the smart thing and aren’t divulging too much info or specs. I’m sure quite a few things will change before the first car is delivered.
Also, I feel like the public is more interested in its cost, range and gadgetry than it’s mechanical underpinnings.
